When not in use, roll up your Pouch and either place in your pack or outside pocket. If you have a Pouch House, place your Pouch inside the House and store on the inside or outside of your pack. When you set up camp for the night, take your food and if not already, put it in a dry sack. Place your dry sack inside the Possum Pouch. Close your Pouch with the Hook and Loop closure to ensure nothing can get inside. Place your Pouch outside or inside a hut (NOT inside your tent or pack). You can secure your Pouch with the handy carabina that it comes with. I also store my rubbish (which I store in a sealable bag) in the dry sack inside the Pouch. I leave nothing in my tent or pack. Pro Tip: open up your zips and clips on your pack so mice can poke their heads inside and see that there is nothing of interest inside rather than nibble a hole to find that out.
That is a really hard question to answer as every walker has different eating habits. For example, I eat very light when I hike and I hike with my son, who eats a lot more. For two of us, I could comfortably fit food for both of us in a Large Pouch for 5-6 days. As a single user of a Large Pouch, I would comfortably store 7-8 days worth of food. The small Pouch would be ideal for 1-2 days hiking. If you do a variety of different multiday hikes, I would recommend getting the large size to give you greater variety of use. .
The wire mesh used for the Possum Pouch is sourced within Australia and is food grade, stainless steel mesh. While it is tough, the wire can distort and stretch. If the wire is crimped, it can be pressed flat again. The bag itself can be rolled. The bag can also be folded, but doing this may cause the wire to be crimped. Some users have said that the wire mesh can be abrasive when rubbed against more delicate fabrics when put in the pack - I usually roll and put in my pouch around other items to prevent it rubbing - but if you are worried, or just want to store your pouch in something, then the Pouch House is for you. The fabric is designed to slide the pouch in and out of your pack with ease. It's also great for storing it on the outside of your pack
Need a safe spot for your Pouch? Meet the Pouch House - crafted from lightweight, water-resistant fabric with a simple envelope-fold design. It’s the perfect house for your Pouch. While rare, the wire on the Possum Pouch can sometimes rub against other items in your pack. The Pouch House solves this by creating a smooth barrier, so your Pouch slides in and out of your pack effortlessly. Just loosely roll up your Pouch, tuck it into the Pouch House, and store it inside your pack or in an outer pocket for quick access.
Currently, all Pouches are made locally in Launceston, Tasmania and all by hand, by myself. I take great care in making sure each Pouch is made with the utmost care and with no faults. Not all my sewing lines are 100% straight but you can be guaranteed that all my love and care is put into each bag.
Because the wire mesh comes in large rolls and is knitted together by industrial machines, the needles require oiling to avoid breaking. Because of this, I have noticed that in the first few metres of the roll coming off the machines, it tends to be a bit more oily than the rest of the roll. I have tried to mitigate this by wiping those bags effected myself, but if you are still unhappy about the feel, you could give the bag a rinse with some washing detergent, rinse well and place outside to dry.
If you have specific requirements, please email me to discuss. The wire I use comes in a standard width - but length can be varied.
I have had some people tell me they have used it fishing to store live bait in, or put crayfish in. Put cans in it and put in a nice cold creek, to keep them cold. But really, it's uses are only limited to your imagination . If you have some photo's of how you have used the Pouch, then please send them through to me.
